The Halifax County Department of Tourism on Friday announced that Ben Owen has joined the staff as the marketing assistant.

In this position, Owen will assist tourism director LaTonya Sadler Hamilton with creating and executing marketing plans to attract visitors to Halifax County.

A lifelong Halifax County resident, Owen spent more than a decade working in various hospitality positions at local businesses before returning to school in 2018, where he majored in recreation, parks and tourism. While studying at Radford University, Owen held the director of concerts position for the campus events board while also working as a research assistant for Dr. Anita Zatori.

His accomplishments include graduating summa cum laude and being named Outstanding Student of the Year in Tourism and Events. Since graduating, he has worked part-time for the tourism department while serving as an AmeriCorps member for the Virginia Service and Conservation Corps at Staunton River State Park.

“I am excited to have Ben on board to assist in promoting Halifax County as a tourist destination. Ben’s familiarity with the community, previous work experience and education make him an asset to the department,” Halifax County Department of Tourism Director LaTonya Sadler Hamilton said. “His creativity and strong tourism marketing background will help him excel in his role.”

With marketing experience as director of concerts, supplemented by his education in the latest tourism trends, Owen helps fill a vital role in Halifax County’s economy, according to Sadler Hamilton.

In this position, he will help promote Halifax County and its attractions to visitors, who will, in turn, spend money at local hospitality businesses. This will prove essential as the local hospitality industry recovers economically following shutdowns in 2020, said Sadler Hamilton.

“I am thrilled to accept the marketing assistant position with the Halifax County Department of Tourism,” Owen said. “We have many great attractions and hidden gems here in Halifax County. From dark skies to getting behind the wheel of a Formula One race car, I want to make sure we put these uniquely Halifax County experiences at the forefront when sharing our community with visitors.”

Halifax County Department of Tourism serves the broader interests of the economy of Halifax County by promoting it as an attractive travel destination to support, maintain and expand efforts to strengthen the economic position and provide opportunities for people in the community.
